Glossary of Joinery Terms

Fanlight Sash window - fixed or opening, normally above transom.
Awning Top hung, hinges or friction stays, open out from bottom
Casement Side opening, normally hinged
Jamb Outer members of frame
Mullion Vertical member normally separating sashes / doors
Sill Bottom member of frame
Facings Over face of jambs and head, concealing join to wall cladding
Sash The framework that holds the glass
Beading Shaped timber to hold glass
Putty Alternative to beading to hold in glass
Transom Static horizontal crossmember between windows, or between doors and windows.
